The inspiration behind Abandonism: Travelling in Africa

It didn’t feel right to start Abandonism, without sharing a bit more on the inspiration behind it and the story of where it all began……Africa!!!

For us the adventure began in Zambia where we were living and working for almost 2 years. This became our launch point for exploring some of the surrounding countries in Southern Africa, before later setting off on a big adventure driving through East Africa.

A lot of what we saw we did in our trusty 4x4, Ruth, however we are not against catching a plane. And despite the fact that Ruth was designed for us to be able to sleep in the rooftop tent, we often found accommodation (and food) in Africa to be such good value, it was easier to stay at local lodge for a night and eat out. That said, there were times when we later thought our roof top tent may have been more comfortable (and cleaner).

So what did we see? Where did we go? What should you check out?

I have pulled together a series of posts by country/ grouped countries, where you can read and see more. Click on the links to find out more!

Rwanda & Uganda
Rwanda One of the most amazing countries we visited in Africa. Yes, it is amazing because of the lush green hills, tea plantations and of course, the mountain gorillas. But I found it amazing because we were there less than 20 years after the 1994 genocide and the country felt
Tanzania (Including Zanzibar)
This post could go forever, Tanzania is a huge country with a ton of very famous tourist sites and just cool stuff to see and do. Mount Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and more! We spent about 6 weeks there all up and pretty much followed the tourist trail. If
South Africa & Zimbabwe
South Africa South Africa is a country I will keep coming back to; it has so much to see and do, every trip is different from the last. During our time in Zambia we managed to get down to South Africa only the one time for a couple of weeks,
Malawi & Mozambique
Malawi Malawi kicked off our East Africa expedition and it would have been extremely easy to locate ourselves next to the beautiful Lake Malawi, however we did move around, spending a brief amount of time in the larger cities, Blantyre and the capital Lilongwe and the mountains. The country is
Botswana & Namibia
Two of my favourite countries on the continent! Although I probably say that about a lot them :-) We were fortunate to get to both countries on a number of occasions, given our proximity to their borders from Livingstone. In particular we made a lot of trips to Chobe National
Zambia
Zambia was home for us for a couple of years so I could have easily doubled the size of this post. We went to most corners of Zambia and lots of pretty special places. Zambia has plenty to see and surprisingly, a bit of distance to cover. I have provided
Kenya
This was the end to our East Africa trip so we squeezed in as much as we could. Another country with a ton of stuff to do and many famous attractions. We had a few weeks in Kenya but could easily have doubled that, not making it to places such
